To be honest, before I did the proper research on the destination, I always pictured it as ‘yet another Vietnamese beach resort’. The more I researched about the destination, the more I got intrigued about it as a destination. It’s not just about sitting on a lazy beach all afternoon; you can have an energetic morning, a sluggish afternoon and an absolutely different experience at sunset.

What is Mui Ne?
Mui Ne is a seafront near the Phan Thiet on the south-central coast of Vietnam. It is longer than a coastline, and the main tourist area has a long strip of hotels, resorts, restaurants, cafes, and beach shop fronts together (Vietnam Tourism).
Previously owned by the village of Phan Thiet, until 1920 the fishing village of Mui Ne was a small community. Now tourism lines its roads, but traditional fishing lifestyles can still be seen around the coast, mostly at the harbor.

Here, you are at a place where the whole world can be found in all their diversity. One minute you are within resorts and international restaurants, thirty minutes later you are watching fishermen tending their multi-coloured boats.

For visitors, Mui Ne is quite attractive as a brief seaside getaway. To give an indication, a present day Vietnam tourism guide recommends one to three days is about right to explore the main attractions, but you can also comfortably extend your stay if you prefer extra beach relaxation or excursions. Why come to visit? Why visit? For once, the more than usual scenic spots increase. For two, the specific combination of colorful sand dunes, cool breeze, and crystal-clear sea. Though, exactly because of the unique combination of the three.
So then what is it about this portion of Vietnam that merits adding to your list to visit?
For me it’s the variety.
Most beaches just have about the same thing: sand beach restaurants and hotels.
With Mui Ne there is something a little different as it has a desert in front of the coast.
The White Sand Dunes can seem almost otherworldly, but the Red Sand Dunes offer another kind of sunset. Then there is the Fairy Stream, the fishing port, the beaches, the seafood and the dominant kitesurfing scene. (Vietnam Tourism)
I think it has a sort of feel to it that someone combined a trip to the coast with a small desert expedition.
And that is exactly the reason why photographers, lovers, families, backpackers, and adventure travelers will also find some of the fun here.
Best Things to Do in Mui Ne
If this is your initial visit, these are the attractions that I would place at the very top of my list.
1. Explore the White Sand Dunes
Perhaps the most dramatic natural sights in Mui Ne are the White Sand Dunes.
They are also a place that can make you have a moment of reflection. Wait a Minute, am I really in Vietnam?
The dunes provide a stunning juxtaposition of desert-like horizon on the pale sweeping sand, and in the more distant Bau Trang area a presence of lakes and lotus flowers starkly contrasted this. It is possible to walk over the dunes, use the camera to take photographs of the scenery, and for those of a more active disposition, there is the opportunity to sandboard or go on a 44 trip.

Early morning is in particular nice because the temperatures are more tolerable and the light can be beautiful.
Late afternoon is also a popular time, and the efficiency level is thirty percent.

Photos can make it look wonderfully soft but walking uphill through it is a whole other matter.

You could have a walk in the canyons, take pictures or even hang-gliding down the sands.
I like the idea of a very simple run through. You may not need to be here for hours.
Sometimes 30 minutes of good, quality play at the right time of day is worth 2 hours of playing at the wrong time of day.
3. Walk Through the Fairy Stream
The Fairy Stream is on a whole other level.
Stepping forward the same shallow water also running in parallel with strange red and white rocks.

The experience is not very complex.
Remove your shoes.

This approach involves starting from the concerned outcomes and tracing their origins by moving against the current to the source.
That’s pretty much it.
And that’s where one thing that could be said of it can be nothing but part of the beauty.
A leisurely stroll barefoot down the stream, after being in the busy hubbub of popular sites, can be quite near a sort of meditation.
Any shoes you can get wet in, and don’t approach it as a serious trekking expedition, it’s more a casual nature walk.
4. Visit Mui Ne Fishing Village
If you’re interested in the traditional part of Mui Ne, then get up early and go to the fishing harbor.
This is a part of the destination where perceived quality can be set against the actual quality.
Fishermen down on the docks, fish being brought ashore, people doing business in the streets, artfully upbeat music, strikingly vibrant colors, local life is alive and kicking before most vacationers are even awake.

5. Spend Time on Mui Ne Beach
Of course, when vacationing at a coastal destination you must allow yourself the opportunity to do nothing!
All in good fun.
There’s no need to schedule every single hour of your trip.
The general beach area of Mui Ne is dotted with resorts and places where you can rest, swim , eat or just sit and drink cold water and watch the water. Vietnam Tourism also mentions relaxing on the beaches of Mui Ne as a fundamental experience of the area. (Vietnam Tourism)
Attempting to do too much time is precious, but travelers tend to cram their itineraries with too many sights.
Otherwise, some time can be left free.
Read a book.
Stroll along the beach.
Get some sleep.
Enjoy the sunset.
Traveling does not have to be necessarily so productive.
6. Try Kitesurfing

If you haven’t been kitesurfing before.
In a new group you do not have to arrive as an expert.
The local schools and instructors are for beginners while the rigid conditions suit the professionals.
And even if you don’t care to give it a shot yourself, sometimes it can be just a fun spectacle to watch accomplished kitesurfers.
Colorful kites flying across the lake above the sea make a rather lovely sight.
7. Try Other Water Sports
Doing disciplines is far from the only thing you can do.
Given conditions and operators, travelers can also find activities like:
- Windsurfing
- Surfing
- Stand-up paddleboarding
- Sailing
- Other beach activities.

If still you are visiting when the winds are slightly stronger, this will be an excellent stop on your round.
8. Visit the Po Shanu Cham Towers

The Po Shanu Cham Towers, which are close to Phan Thiet, are an excellent place to investigate the Cham history of the area.
Since there is a small site it will not need to take all day.
Makes sense.
You Yes have the option to pull in other attractions and add some cultural history to what could be a beach- and dunes-only holiday. Vietnam Tourism lists the Cham towers as one of the main attractions in this area. (Vietnam Tourism)
9. Take a Trip to Bau Trang
If you have sufficient time, go farther out toward Bau Trang aka the White Lake.
This set of environments mixes white sand dunes with lakes, and a part of lotus either in season or not.
The juxtaposition is fantastic.
You have sand that could be desert in appearance, water, and in the farther landscape tropical plants.
Based on Vietnam Tourism, Bau Trang is approximately 30Km away from Mui Ne, so it makes a richer visit rather than a half hour walk from the main tourist strip. (Vietnam Tourism)
It is a tempting destination for those who like photography and strange environments.
10. Eat Fresh Seafood
Let’s discuss food.
Let’s be honest, you can’t take a trip to the coast and not indulge in some seafood.
Thanks to the area’s fishing history, there is also a large variety of seafood available to eat in Mui Ne. The variety includes fish shellfish, prawn squid crab and many other types of seafood cooked in Vietnamese styles.
Part of the fun of dining here is the simplicity.
Remove or with fresh seafood.
Cold drink.
Ocean at hand.
Not a bad combination in my opinion.
If you aren’t a fish fan, there are still lots of other food to choose from in Mui Ne, mostly in the tourist area by the strip.
Best Time to Visit Mui Ne
What time you choose will also depend to some extent on what you want to do.
If you are more interested in relaxing by the sea and outdoor activities, expect nice weather, lots of sunshine and light winds.
Vietnam Tourism states that the climate of Mui Ne is warm, and this location is also linked to outdoor activities and water sports. (Vietnam Tourism)
The travel advice from Vietnam Airlines states that between December and February experiences cool, pleasant weather conditions while April and May might be extremely hot. On top of that it states that between September and December has more rain, which might be a problem for outdoor activities or photography. (Vietnam Airlines)

What is the ideal length of time to remain in Mui Ne?
This is a good starting point of between 2 and 3 days for most first timers.
This is how I would set it up.
One Day in Mui Ne
If you’re short on time:
Morning
- Fishing village I mention this as it is an interesting and positive use of local housing and also gives insight into some of the local industries meaning there are plenty of small businesses, same here this is also a reason there are a lot of small businesses as many people choose to stay in the village.
- Breakfast
- Fairy Stream
Afternoon
- Beach and lunch?
- While in the hotel.
- With pain duration of late afternoon
- Red Sand Dunes
- Sunset
This is providing a little flavor of the destination and not cramming every ounce within a very high pressure agenda.
Two Days in Mui Ne

Three Days in Mui Ne
Come for a third day and take time.
This is where I bring in the additional beach time, a water activity, the Po Shanu Cham Towers or a longer tour.
The best thing about the three days is that you need not look at your watch all the time.
The way to Mui Ne from Ho Chi Minh City;
Probably one of the biggest attractions for anyone visiting South Vietnam is how accessible Mui Ne is from Ho Chi Minh City.
The driving distance is about 200 km between Ho Chi Minh City and the destination point, but varies from point of departure to point of arrival. Present travel guides estimate the driving time at 3-5 hours (within Vietnam).
You have a lot of options.
Bus or Limousine
Most travelers would prefer to take this way.
There are bus and limousine-style services to the Mui Ne/Phan Thiet area from Ho Chi Minh City, usually taking between three and five hours. (Local Vietnam)
This would typically be where I would probably search first when I was a budget traveler.
Private Car
A private transfer will cost more but offers the comfort of door to door service.
This translates well to families, groups, or those traveling with large amounts of luggage.
Train
You can also travel by train, but remember an important detail:
No direct train to tourist resorts in China.
Travel by train is available from Ho Chi Minh City to the Phan Thiet/Binh Thuan area, then you will require taxi, transfer, or other transport to complete the journey. (VietnamWhereStay)
So although the train can be a nice option, don’t compare its journey time to that of a direct bus without adding in the last transfer.
How to Get Around Mui Ne
Mui Ne is situated along the coast.
This is something to bear in mind when booking your own accommodation.
When staying a distance from the restaurants, beaches, and tour operators walking around gets annoying.
Your main options include:
- Taxi
- Available ride-hailing services
- Hotel transfers[edit] hotel transfers are possible from the airport itself where vendors sell into Airport Express and shuttle buses to the city’s numerous hotels.
- Rental of a motorbike/scooter?
- Prepackaged tours
Whether to have a scooter is very convenient but be sure you are allowed to and also comfortable to even drive it in Vietnam.
Just because everyone is doing it, don’t rent.
A holiday should not be about finding out that trying to keep to a speed limit and cruise on unfamiliar roads makes you uneasy.
Where to Stay in Mui Ne
Ham Tien is also a practical place for first-time visitors…
The main tourist road has accommodation, restaurants, cafes, beach resorts, and tour operators within easy reach. The latest Vietnam tourism guide was naming Ham Tien as the most developed place for many tourists. (Vietnam Tourism)
Budget travelers. They focus on solutions that focus on saving money. The use of jet lag, a mechanism that is inexpensive, in the marketing of low-cost airlines. To do that, research is done to examine the trade off between saving time and saving money for scheduling purposes.
Look for:
- Guesthouses
- Hostels
- Small hotels.
- Family-led accommodation

Look for properties with:

If you are going to stay for a week or longer, an apartment or large room is understandable.
The key aspect is to verify the real destination, not only the hotel name.
Mui Ne is elongated.
If a property is “in Mui Ne” then in reality it may be quite a distance away from the places you’d like to visit.
What to Pack for Mui Ne
Packing for Mui Ne can be simple.
I’d focus on lightweight, practical items:
- Clothing to breathe in
- Comfortable sandals to wear while walking:
- Swimwear
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Hat
- A reusable water bottle
- Light rain breaking through the tops of the dog walkers on the river67.
- Mini day bag.
- Waterproof bag for electronic device
A decent pair of shoes can make life on the dunes much easier. Though to be fair, you’ll probably get sand in them regardless.
And yes, precisely everywhere.
Your shoes, your bag, your clothes but to an extent everything you touch will have sand on it.
That’s a part of the experience at Mui Ne.
How Expensive is Mui Ne
Mui Ne is suitable for various budgets.
Your largest expenses will normally be on accommodation, transport activities and food.
Budget travelers can stay in cheap guesthouses and dine in local restaurants, while those looking for a more upmarket experience can opt for beach resorts and private tours.
Instead of establishing a one size fits all daily amount I would recommend first have an idea of the sort of trip you want. Trip Budgeting A (mentioned in the last section), you can provide a good estimate of the random explanation. The beaches seem to offer families somewhere to relax while the attractions, like the sand dunes and Fairy Stream, offer something for families to do away from the hotel.
But must be cautious about heat and sun exposure, in particular in the dunes.
Taking advantage of the early morning hours will be your best ally.
Ditch everyone on the hot sand at high noon and go early to the dunes or spend the afternoon on the beach or at the hotel pool.

Yes actually.
The destination has plenty of opportunities for relaxed couple time:

And you don’t have to make every moment a romantic one.
Sometimes the best thing we can do is sit down silently together and watch the world go by on the edge of the sea.
Mui Ne Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors
A few things I would be mindful of are..
Get off to a good start, train early: that inaugural lesson is the foundation of success. If you don’t begin with a strong, positive lesson, the chances of carrying through the program are slim. Also, the detailed planning required for an effective first class can seem overwhelming when time is tight, so don’t postpone.
The dunes become far more comfortable in the lead up to the hottest part of the day.
Don’t over-screen
Mui Ne is pretty good when you keep just a little space.
Check the location precisely before booking your hotel.
The place extends along the coast.
Respect local communities
The fishing harbor is a workplace, not an attraction.
Apply Sunscreen
The sand, the sea, and the hot sun all got a bit much.
Maintain flexibility in your planning
Water sports and recreation are susceptible to weather conditions.
Bring some money with you

If I was organising my first trip, I wouldn’t want to go at it too hard.

Arrive at the Red Sand Dunes to watch the sunset.
End with a seafood dinner.
It is as straightforward as this.
Make no haste.
Day 2: Sand Dunes and Adventure
Get up in the morning and go to the White Sand Dunes.
Discover the environment and for those who want or participate in an off-road activity.
Come back for lunch.
Relax all day long at the beach or go for a water sport.
Tonight, have the “chill” dinner.
Day 3: Culture and Slow Travel
Go to Po Shanu Cham Towers.
Discover more of the immediate vicinity.
Indulge in a leisurely lunch.
If you have had enough of the sun and sand, use the rest of the afternoon to swim, sit, and relax or give another activity a go.
And then, top off your Mui Ne trip with one more sunset.
That’s enough.
You don’t have to list every attraction as if you’re making a checklist.
