A nice option if you want stunning Bay views but can’t commit to a very busy 2 days. Stroll along the water, walk through the small downtown, grab a quick lunch, and relax into the Bay time.

Big Sur is beginning to look somewhat like one of those places.

If you are flexible, stay the night.

17. Yosemite National Park

Also, this is the one that needs the most planning.

It’s a different ballgame when traveling with kids.

Good choices include:

Muir woods- first experience of giant redwoods.
Santa Cruz: Beach + entertainment is a perfect combo.
0.2 0.2. Monterey: also, very informative if you intend to build in the Monterey bay aquarium as an entire objective.
Sausalito: Easy walking, waterfront view, and fairly straightforward logistics.
Half moon bay: a laidback beach-centric choice.

Consider your comfort with car rides when selecting a destination. The destination may be awesome, but if your kids are tired of the trip and harping on, “Are we there yet? ” by mile nine, heading halfway across the country probably isn’t the best choice.

If I had to compile a simple first-time itinerary, I would keep it simple why attempt to see half of Northern California in a single day?

1. Check traffic before leaving

The traffic of the SF Bay Area often means larger, slower travel distance.

A destination, which on the map is just round the corner, could take you three times longer at busy times.

2. Start early

Mainly for Muir Woods Napa Monterey, Point Reyes and Yosemite.

Getting in early means you have more flexibility.

3. Don’t underestimate distances

California appears far too easy on this map.

A line drawn between two points says nothing about winding coastal roads, traffic jams parking viewpoints or lunch stops.

4. Reserve popular attractions

This point is exemplified most evidently at Muir Woods. Even the N.P.S. clearly states that pre-arranged reservations must be made to park and use the shuttles. (National Park Service)

5. Check conditions

Will the weather change back quickly? Weather conditions fluctuate rapidly, most of all in the vicinity of the sea and in mountainous regions.

Check for conditions on Yosemite and other outdoor places before leaving.

6. Don’t overload your itinerary

This is, quite possibly, my favorite rule for traveling.

Leave some blank space.

Between blasting through, five, places, and enjoying two properly, go for the second.

7. Bring layers

The weather in San Francisco can be cold and windy and warmer in the inland wine country.

Similar combinations of weather conditions may differ on the same day between the city, coastal region, and interior valleys.

8. Download important information

For me, thinking of traveling in and around San Francisco I don’t think of the city as a standalone destination. I think of it as a base camp. The city brings the restaurants, neighborhoods, energy, and culture while the region brings the forests, vineyards, beaches, mountains, and coastlines.
That’s what is so fantastic about planning a trip anywhere here.
Go off the beaten path at the redwood groves in the morning. Enjoy your lunch by the ocean. Stroll through a quaint small town on the coast in the afternoon, and still make your way back to San Francisco for dinner.
Not bad I would say, one day.
And truthfully, that’s the real trick with trips like these: don’t try to accomplish everything. Choose the experience you are most pumped about, spend enough time in that destination, and allow the journey from one stop to the next become the experience.
