This long video will teach you how to set up camp in Monster Hunter Wilds by going over locations, materials, tips, and more.

In Monster Hunter Wilds, there’s nothing like the thrill of seeing new locales. It’s exhilarating and a little scary to explore a new biome for the first time. There are big ecosystems and hidden animals there. On the first day, I was wide-eyed, a little undergeared, and had no idea where I should sleep (or where my hunter should sleep).

You probably found this page because you were looking for how to set up camp in Monster Hunter Wilds. You are in the right place, so don’t worry. This in-depth guide will teach you all you need to know about Monster Hunter Wilds, including how to set up camp in Monster Hunter Wilds, how to find, unlock, and set up pop up camps.

We’ll go through everything step by step, speak about common pitfalls, and I’ll even tell you about some of my own embarrassing mistakes (like when I tried to camp too close to a Rathian nest, which was a rookie move). Are you ready to set up your tent like a pro? Let’s get going.

Why Camps Are Important in Monster Hunter Wilds

Before we talk about how, let’s talk about why. Knowing how essential camps are changed the way I played the game.

Camps are highly significant destinations for your quest in Monster Hunter Wilds. Think of them as your mobile headquarters, where you can:

  • To avoid long walks, you can quickly travel across the map (this is very helpful when you’re attempting to capture that sly Nargacuga).
  • During the search, make sure you have enough Mega Potions on hand. You don’t want to run out of them when you’re about to die. Not good.
  • Depending on the species you’re battling, change your gear or loadouts.
  • Before the fight, cook meals for the buffs.
  • Take a rest between fights.

In short, camps are your only chance. And the sooner you open them, the easier your travel will be.

Step 1: Find out how camps work

Let’s start with the basics. In Monster Hunter Wilds, you have to work for camps; they don’t just give them to you.

  • There are two types of camps. You start with one in each area as your main camp.
  • You need to find, unlock, and sometimes build more camps with resources.

I was surprised at first by how natural the procedure felt. Capcom has really embraced exploring with this game. You should wander around, look about, and see if you can find a place to camp.

And trust me, you’ll know one when you see it. It’s like trekking through a deep forest and then coming upon a flat, open glade with a beautiful view of a waterfall. Finding my first camp seemed like a treat.

Step 2: How to Find New Places to Camp

Now we’re getting into the nitty-gritty.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Here’s how to set up camp in Monster Hunter Wilds the smart way:

  • Take a look around
Walk around the map. Look for sites that look empty, open, or really attractive. The game typically shows these as good places to camp.

I found my second camp by chance while chasing an injured Anjanath. It limped into a canyon I’d never been to before. A small platform that was big enough for a tent sat there, between some gigantic cliffs.
  • Watch for notifications
When you identify a possible place to camp, you will usually get a message like, “This area looks good for a camp.” Return to base and speak with the Field Team Leader. That’s your cue.
  • Talk to the right NPC
After you’ve looked around, head back to your main camp and chat to the Field Team Leader or the Resource Manager. They’ll start a side quest or ask for something, which is usually something like:
    • “Get rid of the monsters nearby.”
    • Get things like vines, timber, and other building materials.

Step 3: Setting up and opening the camp

This part made me feel like I was having guests in the Middle Ages. You have the space, but now you need to make it comfortable.

  • Complete the request
These small tasks aren’t too hard, but you have to pay close attention to them. For example, one of my first unlock jobs asked for “3 Monster Bones (M) and 4 Ironwood Logs.” I had to slay a Kulu-Ya-Ku that was bothering me at another moment.
A useful tip? While you explore, obtain supplies. You never know when you’ll need them.
  • Wait for Construction (If Needed)
Some camps are made as soon as they are done. Some of these take a little while to play. Don’t worry; it usually doesn’t take long, and you’ll get a notice when it’s done.
And that’s all! You have a new camp.

Step 4: The Best Places to Camp Early in the Game (My Top Picks)

Let me tell you about some places that have saved me a lot of time and maybe even my life more than once.

Green Highlands Cliffside Overlook

This one is hidden away on the northern crest. From here, it’s easy to travel to mining nodes, and it’s not far from the paths of some of the more dangerous creatures.
After a Barroth knocked me out, I found this spot. I respawned, turned the wrong way, and there it was. A wonderful view too.

Sapphire Floodplain River Hollow Camp

Great for animals that dwell in water. It gives you rapid access to fishing spots and paths for water monsters.
Think of it as your foundation for fighting amphibians.

Hot amid the Searing Gorge Wastes

Built into the side of a wall composed of lava rock. Good for hunting late in the game and getting rare ore.
Don’t make this one too soon, though. It’s a bad location to be without the right gear due to the heat damage and deadly creatures.

Don’t forget to use camps wisely.

When you unlock your camps, don’t just use them as places to relax. Use them as grounds for your strategy.

This is how I use mine when I’m hunting:

  • Is the monster getting away? Get to a camp quickly along the path it will take to escape.
  • No more potions? Warp, fill up, and jump back in.
  • Is this the wrong gun? Change quickly and get back to the fight.

Honestly, my success rate rose up a lot when I started using camps as chess pieces instead of tents to decorate.

Things I Did Wrong (So You Don’t Have To)

Let’s make things easy for you.

  • Not paying attention to possible places
I walked by at least three suitable camp spots before I understood what they were. I now check every nook and corner.
  • Not giving in requests
Don’t just find a web page and leave it at that. To unlock it, you need to go back and start the mission.
  • Not giving materials enough credit
Some camp constructions need things that are hard to find. Always have a backup of crucial stuff, like wood, vines, and bones.

Frequently Asked Questions about Setting Up Monster Hunter Wilds Camp

How many camps can you put up?
Most areas have 2 to 4 camp slots, however just the main one is open by default. It depends on where you are.

Is it possible to transfer a camp?
No. Once it’s up, it stays up. But you may unlock more than one and switch between them quickly and efficiently.

Can monsters come after your camp?
Not most of the time. Camps are safe areas, but when you fast travel, monsters could be around, so be careful.

Extra Tips: Things I Wish I Had Known Sooner
